| This study assessed the limnology from the Medium Uruguay River Basin in Uruguaiana, Brazil, with a focus on the concentration of heavy metals (Cd, Cu, and Mn), to assess the toxicological potential (cytotoxicity and genotoxicity) for humans using as biological matrix of study human leukocyte cells. The conductivity, resistivity, and dissolved O2 levels exceeded the limits recommended by the National Environmental Council (Conselho Nacional do Meio Ambiente - CONAMA). The percentage of non-viable human leukocyte cells exposed to water samples was approximately 20% higher than that of the negative control (<3%), but similar to the positive control. | Foram estudados em ambos os sexos de Cyprinus carpio o fator relativo de condição (Kn), a relação hepato (RHS) e esplenossomática (RES), o eritrograma, trombograma, leucograma, a localização de glicogênio pelo método de PAS em trombócitos e leucócitos e os níveis séricos de proteína total e de eletrólitos. O Kn nas fêmeas foi maior que nos machos. Os valores médios da RES nas fêmeas foram inferiores aos dos machos, enquanto que o número de leucócitos, linfócitos e neutrófilos foram superiores; porém os níveis séricos de magnésio e de cloreto nos machos foram maiores quando comparados aos das fêmeas. | Changes in diet of Laetacara araguaiae Ottoni and Costa, 2009 were evaluated in the Sucuriú River (Upper Paraná basin, Brazil) in an area with a small hydroelectric power plant, both before and after the formation of the reservoir, in order to answer: Did the construction of the reservoir affected the diet of this species? The results showed greater change of diet composition in the upstream section of the reservoir. It was observed that before the formation of the reservoir and the first year after, the individuals from upstream section formed a group characterized by an insectivorous diet. | In this study we report the hematological, biochemical and hormonal parameters in a juvenile male Amazonian manatee measured before transport, immediately after transport, and during adaptation to a new facility. The animal was transported from Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil, to São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil, (2,733 km) within 6 hours. Among all blood parameters analyzed, we observed obvious neutrophilia, lymphopenia, and increases in the neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio and serum glucose and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels, but these parameters subsequently returned to normal. | The objective of this work was to characterize the blueberry (Vaccinium spp.) cultivar Climax, Rabbiteye group (Vaccinium ashei Reade). In order to achieve that, a survey with blueberry plants (cultivar Climax), in full production, was conducted during the 2012/13 and 2013/14 seasons in the mesoregion of Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. Data regarding the distribution of flower and vegetative buds on branches of two lengths (long and short) was collected. | Com o intuito de registrar os táxons de Chlorococcales encontrados em material perifítico no reservatório de Corumbá-GO, assim como comparar a riqueza específica deste grupo antes e após o represamento das águas, foram realizadas coletas em julho/1996 (fase rio), dezembro/1996 (fase enchimento) a julho/1997 (fase reservatório). Ao longo do eixo rio/barragem, foram estipuladas quatro estações de amostragem, sendo a primeira em ambiente lótico, a última próximo da barragem e duas intermediárias à estas. | Com o objetivo de avaliar a distribuição espacial e temporal da comunidade de cianobactérias no perifíton, bem como os fatores abióticos que atuaram sobre este grupo, foram feitas amostragens em dois reservatórios, Segredo e Iraí, ambos na bacia do rio Iguaçu, Paraná. As coletas foram realizadas no verão (abril) e no inverno (setembro) de 2002, nas regiões superior, intermediária e inferior dos reservatórios. Foram inventariadas 66 espécies de cianobactérias, sendo que Iraí apresentou 50 táxons e Segredo 38. O reservatório de Iraí apresentou densidade de cianobactérias (25 a 101 x ind. 103 cm-2) maior do que aquelas observadas para Segredo (1 a 14 x ind. 103 cm-2). | To evaluate circadian changes in thyroid hormones of piau, Leporinus obtusidens Valenciennes, 1847, (Osteichthyes, Anostomidae) after feeding were determined the plasma levels of thyroid hormones (TH) of 128 fishes, same age, immature, both sexes, distributed into four classes of weight. They were kept in 16 aquaria (100 L), with artificial aeration and 2 L min. -1 water flow, from March to August, 1996, in Aquaculture Station of the Universidade Federal de Lavras (UFLA). | Foram determinados a energia digestível e os coeficientes de digestibilidade aparente de nutrientes de alguns ingredientes pela tilápia-do-nilo (25,24 ± 3,88 g). Os peixes foram alimentados com dietas peletizadas até à saciedade aparente e o valor de digestibilidade de cada ingrediente foi obtido por comparação com a digestibilidade da dieta referência (33% proteína bruta e 0,1% óxido de crômio). | The objective of this research was to validate the colonization process on natural and artificial substrates by benthic invertebrates in a tropical stream in South Brazil. The samples were performed in July and August-2012, and 32 samplers were used, being 16 natural and 16 artificial substrates. In each sample, two replicas were taken for each substrate at the 2th, 4th, 7th, 14th, 21th 28th, 35th and 42th days of colonization. The organisms were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level. In both substrates 3,070 benthic invertebrates were detected, of which 1,753 individuals were collected on the natural substrate, and 1,317 on the artificial substrate. | Garutti (1995) fez a revisão de algumas espécies de Astyanax (Osteichthyes, Characidae) e aquela, conhecida como “tambiú” na bacia do alto rio Paraná, anteriormente identificada como Astyanax bimaculatus, foi considerada nova e posteriormente descrita por Garutti & Britski (2000) como Astyanax altiparanae (Pisces, Characiformes). Naquela oportunidade, entretanto, não foram analisados exemplares da bacia do rio Iguaçu. Esse afluente do rio Paraná apresenta um alto grau de endemismo em sua ictiofauna devido ao isolamento geográfico causado pelas cataratas situadas próximo à sua foz. | This paper describes the first study on parasite diversity in Auchenipterus nuchalis Spix & Agassiz, 1829 (Auchenipteridae). In 31 fish caught in a tributary of the Amazon River, 10,708 parasites were collected, such as Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, Piscinoodinium pilullare, Cosmetocleithrum striatuli, metacercariae of Posthodiplostomum sp, and larvae and adults of Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) inopinatus. These parasite species showed aggregated dispersion, except for C. striatuli, which had a uniform dispersion.
